There’s
something to be said about the attention-grabbing qualities of the
lace up stiletto… however, we’re still speechless from
the last pair we saw. When most people think of the spiky strap-up,
they usually think of sultry women from popular culture and movies–from
vampires to femme fatales. While these connotations still apply, the
boots and shoes have recently elbowed their way into mainstream fashion.
It’s not uncommon for the most straight-laced business woman
to lace up every once in awhile!
Lace up stiletto boots and shoes have the distinct ability to make
a woman feel elegant and desirable at the same time. Heels can range
from 1 to 8 inches. The height creates the illusion of being taller
and possessing long, slender legs. They also flex the calves into
looking shapely and pronounced, especially with lace-up boots that
expose the legs. By having their feet forced at such an extreme angle,
wearers compensate by straightening posture, giving off an air of
confidence in the process.
Lace-up heels have been a standard accessory in bedroom play since
the late 50s, when the shoes experienced their first wave of popularity.
Like any other form of lingerie, knee-high lace boots can give women
a certain sense of domination and self assurance. Likewise, the scanty
boots are a permanent feature amongst exotic dancers, who often incorporate
amazing feats of balance into their routines–much to the pleasure
of spectators. Goth fashion also incorporates lace up stilettos extensively.
Because the shoes were often worn by courtiers and nobility in the
18th century, modern goth enthusiasts favor the old fashioned look
that recalls the gothic dress depicted in paintings and literature
from the era. Of course, the shoes today combine the old look with
sexiness and a bit of perversity.
Before they were predominantly part of goth fashion, however, lace-up
heels were mainly associated with the punk movement in London during
the late 70s. Bands like the Sex Pistols incorporated sex-wear and
bondage into their performances. When the “punk look”
was absorbed by popular fashion during the 80s, stiletto shoes and
boots became widely accepted. Before long, it was common to see business
women in power suits and casual weekenders wearing the spiky footwear
to represent fashion and perversity.
There are some negative aspects to wearing high heels and stilettos.
Holding feet in such an extreme position can break down arches and
cause deformations and bunions. Prolonged wear can cause hip, leg,
and back problems and the large amount of force concentrated in the
tip of the heel can damage carpet and linoleum. Wearing spiky heels
outside is impractical because the spikes stick into the ground.
Lace up stilettos have come a long way in the evolution and modernization
of fashion, but people are still wearing them for the same reasons
they became popular in the first place: because they’re sassy
and brazen and they look fabulous.
